Virtual tour provides caregivers with a sense of dementia

VirtualPerforming simple tasks and navigating around a room is difficult for Alzheimer’s patients — and for those who took a “virtual dementia tour” on Friday.

About 30 people participated in the tour — designed to simulate the physical and mental challenges created by Alzheimer’s disease — at the Daybreak center in Wesley United Methodist Church, 4600 60th St.

The purpose of the tour, created by an Atlanta-based organization called Second Wind Dreams and brought to Kenosha by the Home Instead Senior Care Program in Green Bay, is to give people a chance to experience what it’s like to have dementia.

Lisa Wiedholz, of Azura Memory Care of Kenosha (pictured above), tries out a virtual dementia tour of simple tasks put on Friday by Home Instead Senior Care at Wesley United Methodist Church.  Wiedholz wears goggles that imitate the effect of macular degeneration and headphones that play distracting noise to impair her hearing.  Wiedholz said of the tour, “I felt very disoriented, helpless and lost.”
